Science and Technology Ministry distributes 40,000 laptops to schools

The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation has distributed 40,000 laptop computers to second cycle institutions under the “Better Ghana Agenda” laptop project instituted by the government in 2010.

Dr Joe Oteng Adjei, the Minister, said 800 senior high schools as well as technical and vocational institutes including private ones and nine regions, excluding the Volta Region,  had so far benefited.

Dr Adjei made this known when he presented 1,375 laptop computers to be supplied to 77 SHSs in the Brong-Ahafo Region at a ceremony in Sunyani on Monday.

He said the government, in partnership with the rLG communications, suppliers of the laptops, was working to ensure that all SHSs especially those in the deprived communities were stocked with adequate computers to facilitate effective teaching and learning ICT.

He said all accredited second cycle institutions under the Ghana Education Service were qualified to benefit from the computers and asked those who had not benefitted to contact the ministry as soon as possible.

Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, said the Region had benefited from 8,035 of the laptops since the programme was instituted.

Dr George Adjei-Henne, Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of Education, said the knowledge in ICT was very crucial as almost daily activities hinged on technology.

He commended the government for undertaking ICT training courses for teachers in the public sector which had helped them to pass on the knowledge to students.
