Some 149 teachers in the Bunprugu Yooyo district of the Northern Region have abandoned the classroom to protest nonpayment of their salaries since September this year.
The delay in the teachers' salaries has come about because their names have vanished from the payroll of the Controller and Accountant General Department. The Department is responsible for the disbursement of salaries to the teachers.
Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Solomon Namliit Boar, who explained the reason behind the delay in the teacher's salary, expressed worry about the situation.
"I find it very unfortunate why Controller and Accountant General up to now cannot resolve the matter", he lamented.
He said the teachers' boycott of the classroom has worsened the teacher-pupil ratio of the Bunpkurugu Yooyo district which is already deprived in terms of educational logistics.
He called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ministry of Education and the Controller and Accountant General Department to "sit up and resolve the matter".
The MP said officials of the Accountant General's Department always give the excuse that it was a minor problem which they will fix but have not done so.
