The BCS, Chartered Institute for IT accreditation is a mark of assurance that the University of Liverpool’s online degrees meet the standards set by BCS, and will allow students to fulfil the academic requirement to register as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP).

The CITP standard has been developed in consultation with public and private sector employers and the academic community.

Professor Frans Coenen, deputy head of department and director of studies for online IT programmes at the University of Liverpool’s Department of Computer Science, said: “Our programmes are at the forefront of academic development and my expectation is that this advancement will offer our students a professional advantage as well as providing the necessary knowledge to allow our students to apply for CITP registration.”

With the BCS accreditation students can become student members of BCS at the start of their programme. After successfully completing a University of Liverpool accredited online programme, they can also qualify for Professional (MBCS) membership of BCS.

Membership with BCS offers students and graduates access to a network of industry professionals and career development tools.

“These benefits, in combination with the skills and knowledge students acquire through their online degree, will help prepare them to lead in the IT field,” said University of Liverpool.

Bill Mitchell, director of the BCS Academy of Computing, said: “We need to encourage people into computing at masters and doctorate level to ensure there are enough people able to do research and development at the highest levels, which is why we are particularly pleased to see Liverpool taking a lead in fully online postgraduate degrees.”

Accreditation covers the online IT masters programmes offered by the university’s Department of Computer Science, including the MSc in Information Systems Management, MSc in IT, MSc in Computer Security, MSc in Internet Systems, MSc in Software Engineering and the MSc in Information Systems & Technology
