Tigo Tanzania Launches Awareness Campaign On Education Through Fashion

Tigo Elimu Mwanzo Mwisho Initiative
AN education initiative dubbed 'Elimu Mwanzo Mwisho' aimed at promoting the sector through fashion has been launched in partnership with Tigo Tanzania and Bonnah Education Trust Fund (BETF).

Speaking at a press briefing in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Tigo Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Officer, Ms Woinde Shisael, said Tigo recognises the essential role that education plays in building any community, which is why they decided to partner with BETF in order to support children to access better education in the country.

"Apart from being the first of its kind, this unique event will provide an engaging platform to send out important messages to the masses that will be present in the streets of Dar es Salaam to witness the road show," said Ms Shisael.

'Elimu Mwanzo Mwisho' is a public awareness campaign on education, which will be conducted in the form of a street fashion show to uniquely address the challenges of the education sector, as well as encourage the community on the importance of education.

Ms Shisael said the primary aim of the show is for parents to be touched by it such that they understand the importance of taking their children to school. In the same vein, she said they also want children to understand the true value of education and henceforth motivate themselves to pave their way to a bright future.

The founder of BETF, Ms Bonnah Kaluwa, said the public awareness campaign aimed at attracting over 20,000 people directly at the grassroots to cross over the message about the various challenges facing the education sector, while at the same time entertaining the community by way of a street fashion show, music and other forms of entertainment.

Ms Kaluwa explained that the street fashion show, with the ultimate goal of sponsoring 100 children annually, will be held on October 12, this year, in Dar es Salaam where children will be encouraged to perform better at school and be good education ambassadors, while parents will benefit by having children who are educated and independent.

"It is also a huge contribution to the personal development of the child, family unit and nation as a whole, as it contributes to the socio-economic progress of the country and ultimately helps the government to achieve the millennium development goals which are due in 2015," she said.

The street fashion show is an awareness campaign towards a charity dinner for unprivileged children who cannot afford education which is expected to be held later next month.

It will kick off in the morning at Mnazi Mmoja grounds, go on to Kariakoo, go through Fire, Upanga, Salendar Bridge, Morocco, Mwenge and then climax in the evening at Mlimani City.
