Family Gambia Award

The Family Gambia, a peace education entity and a non-governmental organisation in Lamin village West Coast Region on Wednesday awarded certificates to 21 outgoing students who successfully completed computer and English literacy program organised by the organisation.

Speaking at the occasion, Patrick S Nagbe, the international coordinator of the organisation revealed that Family Gambia as a peace entity was established to promote peace. He said the graduating students mainly from Islamic schools have worked hard to earn the certificates.

For his part, Simon P Mendy, the national supervisor of the organisation, disclosed that Family Gambia is a sister NGO of Family Liberia and Sierra Leone. He added that Family Liberia was formed to protect vulnerable children and youths from abuse and negligence. The agency he said is also determined to give a helping hand to Gambian children and youths.

Mendy said the computer literacy started since 2011 and the second batch of graduates were offered a programme in introduction to information technology/Microsoft word and English literacy. The pprogramme he noted was designed for students particularly Arabic students, who want to study the English language .

Mendy pointed out that, the graduates can be proud of themselves because anywhere they go they can perform to expectation as they have been adequately trained. The national supervisor of the organisation, revealed that, Family Gambia has been volunteering in peace education by distributing peace leaflets to the community as well as sensitizing in peace education. This, he said, was successful as people who don't earlier understand what peace is, were able to understand what peace education is all about and how to co-exist with others.

He noted that, their aim is to sensitise future leaders through their lessons in child care education, peace education as well as conduct training programmes for beneficiaries of their services. He described the gesture as the organisation's contribution towards the realisation of vision 2020.under the leadership of His Excellency Sheikh Professor Dr Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh .

He informed the gathering that his organisation is looking forward to reaching out to schools and communities to sensitise them on peace education.
