Members of the University Teachers
Association of Ghana (UTAG) and Federation of University Senior Staff
Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) have refused to call off their strike
despite appeals for them to do so.
UTAG is aggrieved about book allowances while FUSSAG is also demanding better working conditions for its members.
Although
Vice Chancellors Association of Ghana (VCG) have tried to talk UTAG
members into going back to the lecture halls, they have been
unsuccessful.
UTAG asked VCG to produce a written commitment that
they will pay their allowance and also a roadmap on how their concerns
would be addressed.
But UTAG President, Dr. Anthony Simmons, told Joy News response from the Vice Chancellors is not satisfactory, stressing that the strike will continue.
He
told Joy News although the VCG has indicated they would partner with
UTAG and government for the payment of the book allowance, that was not
an explicit assurance.
"We don't see that to be commitment enough", Dr Simmons said.
Also FUSSAG insists its members will not return to work until government improves their working conditions.
The strikes by both Associations have threatened to disrupt the 2013-2014 academic calendar.
Secretary
General of FUSSAG Jacob Emmanuel Eshun told Joy News although
government has initiated steps to form a committee to address their
grievances, they will not call off their strike until they see progress.
