British Council, Airtel Partner to Benefit Learners

OVER 25,000 teachers and learners in the country's nine regions are set to access educational resources in their schools digitally, thanks to a partnership between Airtel and the British Council to maximise technology benefits in learning.

Under the deal, Airtel will provide full internet accessibility to British Council's digital hubs surrounding schools and communities. Through Microsoft support, the digital hubs have already been set up in Arusha, Bagamoyo, Kilimanjaro, Iringa, Mbeya, Ruvuma, Dodoma, Zanzibar and Mara.

The high speed broadband access from Airtel to the hubs will guarantee teachers and students limitless access to educational opportunities. The hubs in Schools serve as ICT centres for teachers, students and wider communities. Over the last three years, hundreds of schools across Tanzania have benefitted from British Council's work to support educators towards improving teaching and learning process through ICT.

Airtel's Managing Director Sunil Colaso, speaking at the partnership launch in Dar es Salaam yesterday, said, "Airtel believes in empowering the communities through education and today we are proud to join hands with the British Council in supporting education through ICT."

British Council Tanzania's Country Director Richard Sunderland said the partnership builds on the Badiliko partnership between the British Council and Microsoft that supports ICT integration in schools across the region.

"The partnership aims to improve the quality of life of communities through corporate social responsibility work in education," he said. The British Council has invested in digital interventions that enable African schools to participate in the global exchange of knowledge and ideas.
