Naveen Noah Jason and Chung Hui Chuo are among ten international students awarded the scholarships by the Victorian Government.
The Scholarships, funded by the Victorian government in partnership with Victorian universities, are awarded to international students with a record of high level academic achievement in their chosen field of study. They allow the students to complete their doctoral studies at Victorian universities and cover living expenses and tuition fees for the duration of the recipients' studies.
Mr Jason is currently undertaking his PhD in the Department of Chemical Engineering. His research aims to develop a matrix of mini solar cells which can be used in a form of paint to generate green energy.
“The mini solar cells that make up the matrix would store energy. Theoretically the matrix would be used like regular paint. What that would do is transform say the roof into a giant solar cell, generating and storing electrical energy. Technically anyone with a roof over their head would have sustainable electrical power,” Mr Jason said.
Mr Chuo, from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, is currently undertaking research into biased adenosine receptor agonists which has the potential to assist the development of a new generation of therapeutic medicines.
The awards were presented by the Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business, The Hon Louise Asher MP, at a ceremony at Parliament House recently.
The Victorian International Research Scholarship program is an element of government’s activity to drive sustainable growth in the international education sector, and postgraduate research education in particular. This is being done by building awareness of Victoria’s internationally competitive research capabilities and research infrastructure to students, their influencers and governments.
