Universities Senior Staff Announces Indefinite Strike Effective Monday

The Federation of Universities Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike which will affect all public universities, effective Monday August 19.

The group’s National Executive Council (NEC) declared the strike after an emergency meeting on Thursday.

Per the strike, "all senior staff including nurses, pharmacists, hospital laboratory technologists, school teachers, cashiers and security officers" will withdraw their services from the Universities.

FUSSAG is also not happy about the failure by the Government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to address their concerns regarding their migration onto the single spine pay policy.

FUSSAG has also asked the Vice Chancellors Ghana (VCG), the Government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to work concertedly to address their concerns to avert an escalation of the intended strike which is expected to disrupt academic work from next week.

The strike by FUSSAG comes on the heels of a similar strike by University Lecturers which.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) which has been on strike for the past two weeks is demanding the payment of all outstanding book and research allowances as well as market premium arrears.

The combined effect of the FUSSAG and UTAG strikes could grind academic work to a halt on the public University campuses if the situation is not urgently addressed.
