PRNCOF proposes 40 per cent admission quota

Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), have proposed 40 per cent admission quota for the 2013/2014 academic year in view of the limited facilities available.

They therefore appealed to the government as a matter of urgency to provide additional infrastructure needed in order to increase admission.

The proposal was in a communiqué issued by the principals at the close of its 55th Annual National Conference in Koforidua on the theme: “Running colleges of education as tertiary institutions-The role of stakeholders."

The communiqué was read on behalf of the principals by Mr John N.M Baako, Principal of Peki College of Education and General Secretary of PRINCOF.

He appealed to the government for the early release of Ghana Education Trust Fund grants for the completion of some developmental projects that had stalled.

Mr Baako appealed for action to be expedited in implementing the statutes, conditions of service and scheme of service as crafted for the colleges of education in order to stem the steady migration of large numbers of qualified and experienced tutors to other tertiary institutions.

He said with the withdrawal of students’ allowance, government intends to absorb the bills for the feeding of fresh students.

Mr Baako appealed to the government to ensure the timely release of the feeding grants to the colleges without which the colleges would not be able to run their programmes smoothly and effectively.

The principals also appealed to the government to allow management of the various colleges to recruit some key personnel such as librarians, internal auditors, and secretaries as provided for in Act 847.

Ms Helen Adwoa Ntoso, Eastern Regional Minster, said government places high premium on education hence the decision to build 10 more additional colleges of education to help increase the supply of trained teachers.

She said contemporary education must place premium on creative scholarship, research and performance and therefore urged stakeholders to come together to achieve the objective.

Mrs Georgina A. Lartey, President of PRINCOF, asked the colleges of education to ensure that the code of conduct under which trainees are governed on completion of their course is not compromised.
