Kano Gov't To Sponsor 300 SHS Leavers To Study Medicine Abroad

About N2.7 billion would be expended by the Kano State government on the sponsorship of 300 secondary school leavers to study medicine abroad.

Governor Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso stated this during the presentation of letters to beneficiaries, who according to him, were selected from across the state to study medicine and allied courses abroad.

Under the scheme, 100 female students are to specialize in Gynaecology, 100 males and females to study Medicine and another 100 males and females to study Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The governor, in statement by his media aide, Mallam Halilu Dantiye, said admission has been obtained for the students in universities in Sudan, Egypt, Uganda, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and India.

"Our vision for sponsoring these students to study in these critical areas of need is to bridge the gap existing in our healthcare institutions and healthcare delivery system. The only option for the government is to seek admission for the students abroad in light of the limited spaces available in local universities. The scheme will also broaden the cultural and intellectual horizon of the students," he said.

He advised indigenous universities to review their admission procedures so as to provide more spaces to accommodate applicants.

Governor Kwankwaso said before now, the state government spent billions of naira to sponsor about 1,600 students to pursue various professional courses aboard as part of efforts to revolutionize the education sector in the state.

He charged the benefiting students to be good ambassadors of Nigeria, pointing out that their conduct and academic performances will be monitored to ensure that the investment in the future of Kano is not squandered.
