The university’s Board of Governors discussed the preparations needed to receive the first batch for the PhD programme that will be launched in the academic year 2012/2013 during their fourth annual meeting which was held on Wednesday.
The introduction of the PhD programme will provide learners with three key areas of learning: PhD in Total Quality Management, PhD in e-Education – Educational Leadership, and PhD in Health and Environmental Studies – Healthcare Management.
Commenting on the launch of the PhD, Lt Gen Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai Police Chief and Chairman of the Board of Governors, said: “Adopting the three PhD programmes in line with the terms and conditions of the Commission for Academic Accreditation of the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, is crucial to strengthening the knowledge-based society and raising the bar on e-learning as per the best international practices,” he added.
The three programmes will include 14 out of 120 learners who will be selected after a series of written and oral examinations.
The board emphasised that the PhD dissertations will cover various research topics that support the strategic objectives of UAE Vision 2021. Some of the topics will include the challenges of unemployment among Emiratis from a scientific perspective, the scale of quality of knowledge across government entities in the UAE and smart application of information technology towards first-class health-care management in the UAE.
During the meeting the board also discussed the university’s role in Dubai’s transformation into the world’s Islamic economy capital in line with the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The university has already taken steps towards this transformation through the recently launched Dubai Centre for Islamic Banking and Finance. The centre which was launched by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, will provide its programmes in Islamic banking and financing via the university. The board talked about ways to further encourage research studies in banking, Islamic finance and HR development to address the needs of the Islamic economy to further support the initiative.
