History was made at the weekend when over 300 participants received the Pan-Atlantic University certificates for the first time.

Pan-Atlantic University is the new name of former Pan-African University which was established in 2002.

The event was the graduation ceremony for professional programmes for the three units of the University. It held at the Honeywell Group Auditorium of Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos.

Lagos Business School (LBS) graduated 95 participants from the Senior Management Programme, while the School of Media and Communication (SMC) graduated 39, and the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) graduated 182 from various programmes.

In his welcome remarks, Vice-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University, Prof Juan Elegido, congratulated the graduating participants for their hard work and perseverance towards completing their programmes. He also thanked their spouses for their support and patience during the period of study.

Elegido also used the opportunity to enlighten the graduating classes and guests about future plans of Pan-Atlantic University.

He said the University will begin undergraduate programmes in September 2014 with BSc degrees in accounting, business administration and mass communication. These programmes will hold in the new 100-hectre main campus of the University in Ibeju-Lekki.

Central to Pan-Atlantic University’s mission is the nurturing of individuals who are professionally competent, enterprising and zealous for the common good.

LBS, which is the oldest of the three units having started in 1991, is well known for its commitment to developing competent and socially responsible managers. The School has been ranked among top global providers of open enrolment programmes by the Financial Times of London since 2007.

Guest speaker of the event Dr Fabian Ajogwu, SAN, who is the principal partner of Kenna Partners, and himself an alumnus of LBS (EMBA 3), spoke on the importance of doing good.

In his speech, titled “In Pursuit of What: The Paradox of Wealth, Goals and Happiness”, Ajogwu warned of the inordinate desire to acquire wealth, fueled by the misconception that one was pursuing happiness.

He said: “In gathering wealth, let us keep in mind the universal destination of the gatherer and plan for the good of our loved ones and our stakeholders”.

The ceremony ended with the induction of graduates into the alumni associations of the various schools, and the customary cocktail reception at the Diamond Bank Foyer.
