National Sábado Académico Competition Opened
The sixth edition of the National "Sábado Académico" Competition, which is a contest among students of public secondary schools on subjects of English, mathematics and general knowledge was opened on Saturday in Luanda by the minister of Education, Pinda Simão.

The activity is promoted by the national secretariat of the ruling party youth wing (JMPLA), aimed at encouraging students to a greater commitment to their studies in order to better prepare for their future, contribute to the tasks of reconstruction and development of

Angola.
The initiative also aims to promote civic education within the student community, help in purchasing school supplies and other items needed for their academic training, as well as make them more engaged in their studies.

Speaking at the ceremony, the minister of Education said that over the 11 years of peace, Angola has been growing in the political, economic and social field under the wise leadership of President José Eduardo dos Santos, with the contribution of all Angolans.

Highlighted the issue of dialogue and frank debate as a basic rule to reach consensus on conflict resolution, having, however, congratulated the National Secretariat of JMPLA in holding the project dubbed "Educational Achievement and Student Merit".

Regarding the betterment of Angolans' living standards, the minister said that education plays a strategic role, according to the policy objectives outlined by the Angolan government to be materialized over the term until 2017.

To him, the holding of academic contests is another tool to assess the quality of education in secondary schools and also permits the occupation of students in useful activities, thereby combating the bad practices of social life, including drugs, prostitution and juvenile delinquency.

On occasion, the first national secretary of JMPLA, Sérgio Luther Rescova Joaquim explained that with this initiative, his organisation intends to occupy the students' free time, promoting merit, excellence, dedication and patriotism among the Angolan young students.

He said that the country continues to grow strongly in all areas, and the education sector is one of the fastest growths with the construction of schools in various localitie, providing a significant increase in the number of people engaged in various levels of education.

The programme "Sábado Académico" competition is nationwide and is intended to contribute to the technical and vocational training of young people, as well as create incentives for students.
