Unilorin VC, Others Raise Fund for Student's Kidney Transplant
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdul Ganiyu Ambali, Monday, rescued one of his students, a renal patient from the throes of death when he donated N2.5 million towards his treatment.

The 100 level Science Education student of the university, Babatunde Lukman, according to his doctor, needed N3 million for the treatment.

The student's mother, Mrs. Khadijat Babatunde, and other principal officers of the university attended the brief ceremony to mark the donation.

Lukman, who is currently on admission at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, UITH, for kidney failure, is in dire need of kidney transplant for which the money was required.

Presenting the cheque, Prof. Ambali stated that the university was one big family, adding that it was to support a member of the family.

The Vice-Chancellor also praised the efforts of patient's colleagues who had earlier raised N1, 182,000 towards his treatment, saying it was an expression of what the university stood for.

He also thanked Governor of Kwara State, Dr. AbdulFattah Ahmed, for his donation of N1 million to the patient just as the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria raised N625,000.

Ambali said, "whatever happens to one happens to all. Once a student steps into the campus, the university will care for him from the first day to his last day in the school as a family member. Medical challenge can come to anyone at any time and at any age."

He however, noted that doctors could only treat their patients while God who actually heals such patients.

Earlier, the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf, explained how the student slumped and was eventually diagnosed with kidney failure.

Lukman's mother, Mrs. Khadijat Babatunde, in her remarks also thanked the students, Vice Chancellor as well as the academic community and other donors for their efforts to ensure that her son stayed alive.
