Two Injured As UNILAG Students Crash Power Bike Into Professor's Car

Two Injured As UNILAG Students Crash
Two students of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, riding at immense pace on a high speed power bike crashed into one of their professor, Segun Awonusi, who is also the current Dean of the Faculty of Arts in the school.

The boys sustained injuries from the accident and were subsequently rushed to the school's health centre by the professor. The incident happened on Monday shortly after Mr. Awonusi had just presided over the 2013 University of Lagos debate.

At about 9.40 p.m. on Monday, Ibe Leonard, 25, of the Faculty of Education and his friend, Nwonu Somtochukwu, 21, of the Psychology Department, rammed their built for speed bike into the SUV which Mr. Awonusi was driving at the New Hall express road of the University.

The professor, shocked and furious at the young men's carelessness, scolded them and along with two other students, rushed them to the medical centre.

A school officer who confirmed the incident on the condition of anonymity said Mr. Leonard, the bike rider, fractured his right leg.

He was transferred, late Monday night, to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for appropriate treatment. His condition could have been worse if he was not wearing a helmet, the source said.

Ironically, Mr. Somtochukwu, who was riding at the back and was not using a helmet, was lucky to have sustained minor injuries.

He got treated at the medical center as the staff were confident of their capability to take care of him.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management and Services), Duro Oni, and Mr. Awonusi, visited Mr. Somtochukwu at the medical centre. They gave him N10, 000 as emergency fund in case he needed to get anything to facilitate the treatment of his friend at the Igbobi hospital
