Robbers Kill Two University Students, Injured Many |
The students numbering over 3,000, blocked the Onitsha -Enugu expressway for over five hours resulting into traffic gridlock.
Daily Trust learnt that more than eight students were seriously injured during the robbery incident which lasted for five hours with no challenge from any security outfit
Our reporter gathered that Tessy Oseloke, a first year Mass Communication student, was killed because she refused to be raped by the robbers.
The protesting students complained that some of the victims taken to one of the hospitals in Awkuzu were refused treatment, because of lack of cash.
The president of the Student's Union Government, Casmir Obiakor told journalists that the problems in the school have become intolerable.
He said five hostels were robbed by the hoodlums adding that "my fear is who is next, because I was kidnapped last week by gunmen too and I was just released this week Monday.
"Something needs to be done, the security in this place is nothing to write home about and moreover, the communities in this place do not help matters, they have their own vigilante groups but they are not effective."
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Obiajulu Obikeze while speaking on the incident said what the students were doing was to create awareness on their plight, saying, "we are having security challenges in this area, not only in the campus but outside the campus. This action has been constant in this area, everybody is becoming helpless and we believe that is why the students are creating such awareness, we are begging them not to be destructive as the problems will soon be over."
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Emeka Chukwuemeka said that there was no such information to the police that some people were killed and that the command is doing everything possible to calm students and also to make sure that the environment is highly secured for them.
