The University started the training by sending trainees to Israel and has trained 44 trainees there in two rounds; however, it is now offering the whole training in Ethiopia.
So far, over 380 Ethiopians graduated in Mechanical Engineering in first degree from the University have got the opportunity to be employed in international shipping organizations after taking the marine engineer training on Lake Tana.
Bahir Dar University President Dr. Bayile Damte says the University has planned to produce internationally competent students in the area. To this effect, the University is building a campus near Lake Tana to train one thousand students a year, he said.
State Minister of Education Dr. Kaba Urgessa for his part said the University has commenced the program mainly to produce trained man power for foreign market.
The campus being built has a shape of a ship and would be furnished with all materials needed in a ship.
Our reporter Muluken Kasahun says Bahir Dar University is the first in Ethiopia and second in Africa in giving such training.
