The Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two universities to run ICAG professional programmes.

The University of Professional Studies (UPS) Accra and the Pentecost University College (PUC) signed the MoU to enhance accountancy education in the country and strengthen the training of competent accountants for the job market.

By the agreement, the two tertiary institutions will integrate Part 3 and some Part 4 courses of the ICAG into the curricula of the master’s programmes offered at the institutions.  The beneficiaries would graduate with Masters of Business Administration Accounting and Finance, Masters of Philosophy Accounting and Masters of Communication.

Speaking at the signing of the MoU at a ceremony in Accra, the President of the ICAG, Mrs Angela Peasah, said the beneficiaries would be exempted from taking part in the parts 1, 2 and 3 of the Chartered Accountant professional programme.

“This is to ensure their continuous integration into the professional programme once they have completed their master’s programme,” she said.

She explained that the long-term objective of the collaboration was geared towards ensuring adequate preparation of the graduate students for the professional examinations with minimal frustrations. Also, she said it was to enrol “value added” trained accountancy professionals for the job market.

The Vice Chancellor of UPS, Professor Joshua Alabi, said the agreement was another step to brighten the future of accountancy students in the country. He urged the institute to consider involving their members in lectureship in the universities. The Rector of PUC, Rev. Dr Peter Ohene Kyei, also lauded the collaborative programme to train accountants.

He said the agreement was a landmark pact for the PUC, since it was a young university, adding that they would work hard to train the best practitioners of the profession to have the skills, competence and integrity.
