Fire Razes Gilgil Girls Secondary School Dormitory

 Gilgil Girls Secondary School Dormitory
Fire razed down a dormitory at Gilgil Girls Secondary School on Thursday evening. A worker who declined to be named said the students were in class for their evening studies when the fire broke out.

"Students saw smoke billowing from their dormitory and rushed there but could not get in because of the fire," said the worker. He said the dormitory's 54 occupants lost all their personal effects.

It took intervention from firefighters at the nearby army barracks to put off the fire before it could spread to nearby buildings. Naivasha deputy police boss Paul Korir said initial investigations pointed to an electric fault.

He said the police, members of the school management and Kenya Power personnel are on the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.

"No one was injured during the incident as the students were in class and intensive investigations have started," he said. Naivasha Red Cross coordinator Felistus Kioko said they are making plans to assist the affected students.

"We shall supply the students with blankets, soaps and mosquito nets and counsel those who were affected by the fire," he said.

The incident caused panic and anxiety among residents as parents rushed to the school to inquire on the fate of their children. By the time we went to press, the school administration was in a closed door meeting to discuss the fate of students affected by the fire.
