Professor Roger Kain FBA, Dean and Chief Executive of the School of Advanced Study, commented: ‘Jules is a significant figure in the fields of law librarianship, legal information provision and legal bibliography. He has already proven himself to be a real asset to IALS, which holds the UK’s national legal research library, one of the world’s outstanding libraries in its field.
As part of the School of Advanced Study, IALS plays a leading national and international role in the support and promotion of research in law, and in particular in the provision of legal research information at a time when many universities are unable to maintain broad research collections. Jules’ substantial experience and expertise have contributed to making the Institute a pioneer in the application of digital technology to make legal research resources and materials freely available internationally. Jules has exciting plans for further activities and I look forward hugely to developing these with him.’
Professor Sir Adrian Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, said: ‘I am delighted that Jules Winterton will be taking the helm at the IALS. He commands the respect of the legal community both academic and practising and will be a tremendous asset to the already enviable reputation of the University and the Institute.’
Jules Winterton will take up his position at a date to be agreed.
