The event was held at the Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus of the University of Johannesburg’s School of Tourism and Hospitality. The conference was organized by the Department of Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, University of Johannesburg in collaboration with the College of Architecture and Planning, Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology, Ghana.
The Conference which was endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Africa, brought together researchers, academics, administrators and practitioners representing educational institutions, government agencies, contracting organizations, consulting enterprises, financial institutions and other construction related organizations from all over the world.
The objective of the conference was to confront the infrastructural development issues in Africa and to generate new ideas for championing the accelerated infrastructural development of the continent.
The award winning paper, co-authored by the two senior members of KNUST and presented at the conference by Dr. Adinyira, was titled “Illegal Appendages to Residential Buildings in Kumasi, Ghana: A case Study of North Suntreso”.
The paper examined the extent of the problem of unauthorized appendages to residential buildings in North Suntreso, a suburb of Kumasi, its causes and effects on the health and safety of inhabitants of the area as well as on the physical planning of the area.
As part of their award, their paper would be published in the next issue of ACTA Structilia, the journal that sponsored the award. Also both authors will receive a free one-year subscription of this journal as well as copies of four different text books on the environment.
