Protest At University of Liberia

Normal academic activities were on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 disrupted on the main campus of the state-run University of Liberia (UL) on Capitol Hill in Monrovia as a result of a protest by the Student Unification Party (SUP).

SUP is one of the three campus based student political parties at the UL. In a chat with this paper, the Chairman of SUP, Mr. Nathan Kpoa, said their action was due to the "failure" of the UL administration to stop the collection of late registration fees of L$150 from students as was negotiated.

According to him, the UL administration "failed" to extend the registration period to two additional weeks for students who came to register late, especially those on the ULSU's scholarship.

"This protest is meant to tell the UL administration to honor our request so that the registration period is extended to additional two weeks for our comrades, especially those on the ULSU's scholarship without any cost attached. The L$150 charged as late registration fees must be cancelled and the administration must refund the money of those who have paid. This is the only way forward. Anything else, the pressure will continue," Mr. Kpao vowed.

"Let me first make it known that it is the administration that is at fault and not the students because the school does not have the capacity to register the over 35,000 students within one month," he among other things added.

Meanwhile, up press time, the UL administration could not be reached for comment.

However, reports gathered by this paper said UL President, Dr. Emmet Dennis, held an emergency meeting with the Faculty Senate yesterday over the action of the protesting students.

But this paper did not get the outcome of the emergency meeting up to press time.
