UAE Student in Houston Space centre
Students from across the UAE took the chance to broaden their horizons with a visit to Space Centre Houston in the US state of Texas.

A group of 26 students from the Institute of Applied Technology took the opportunity to learn more about the links between science, technology, engineering and space.

“We had two major workshops within the training programme. The first workshop revolved around the science and the mechanics of creating a spacesuit. The students were really keen on learning that science and engineering work go hand-in-hand to ensure safety and functionality,” said instructor Lauren Bedrich.

“The second workshop was conducted in a pool, where the students trained with our diving experts to experience minimum gravity. This is the same training that astronauts go through.”

The group also designed, created and launched their own rocket.

“The students took part in many activities that tested their abilities and engaged their intellect to a higher level,” said Hussain Al Ansari, the head of Space EduVentures, which provides space training. “They gained first-hand knowledge of the process it takes to train and educate astronauts.”

The group also got an insight into the Mission Control Centre. “It gave them an overview of how many different elements take part to make a space mission a success,” said Mr Al Ansari.
