Ghanaian president seeks students’ exchange among African Universities

Ghana President Dramani Mahama
President Dramani Mahama of Ghana has said that student’s exchange among African universities will boost learning and increase the value of products of the institutions.

Mahama said this while delivering the convocation lecture of the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti.

The President, who was represented by his Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Opoku, said exchange of students among universities on the continent would avail them the opportunities to interact with their colleagues from other cultures and learn new things.

The Pro-Chancellor of EKSU, Prof. Akinjide Osuntokun, had earlier said exchange programmes were available during his growing up years.

Opoku, who is a former Vice-Chancellor of University of Legon, Ghana, said this programme was long overdue.

She said, “African students should not be seen as foreign students within any African university. Exchange programme is long overdue.”

For the actualisation of world-class universities, Mahama said it would be imperative for universities’ administrators to rid their institutions of the remaining vestiges of colonialism and ensure a robust transparency and accountability to be achieved.
