Despite the number of nursing schools in the Region, the Ensign University College of Public Health, when commenced in September this year, would the first university of public health in the region.
With the state-of-the-art edifices and facilities to take off at Kpong, it is expected to open to 200 students, starting with post graduate courses in Environmental and Occupational Health, Health Policy, Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Behavioural Science and Health Management.
The new facility is designed with the environment and the physically challenged in mind, and comes with a biogas system with four cubic metre digesters, and treatment centers to manage and turn all degradable waste into biogas, to power gadgets in the school.
The two-storey flagship administration block, with built-in lecture halls, is also being fitted with an elevator, while the compound is being landscaped to enhance access for persons with disabilities.
At the time of the visit by this reporter, all the major buildings, including students' dormitory, apartments for faculties and staff, infirmary, conference and ICT centers, an apartment for the dean, and cafeteria were all in their advanced stages of construction, awaiting final touches and furnishing to pave way for admissions which is expected to start in August.
An additional 50 capacity hostel is also at the foundation stage, with plans far-advanced to commence the construction of the recreational centers, including a swimming pool, tennis, volleyball and baseball courts, with paved driveways and car parks.
Touring the construction site on Tuesday, together with other members of the Board of Trustees, Professor Agyemang Badu Akosa, a Pathology Professor at the University of Ghana Medical School and a former Director General of the Ghana Health Service, said, "It is a standard facility conducive for effective academic exercise; everything here is pleasing to the eye.
"It has a strategic location outside the city, with a good ambiance provided by the Volta River, the mountains and the vast area of greenery."
