The 'Students on the Field' week organized by the ministry of youth and ICT together with the Forum of General Students Associations of Rwanda (Forum des Associations Générales des Etudiants du Rwanda, FAGER) has been officially closed.
"Students on the Field" (sic) has been planned following commitments by students' unions from higher learning institutes made during the YouthConnekt Convention held in December.
FAGER President Daniel Komezusenge said that the initiative has contributed significantly to society. "University students this week planted 7,000 trees to prevent soil erosion, we dug 3.5 km of water evacuation trenches and built 2 offices for cell officials," he said. "We provided housing support for 28 elderly and vulnerable people, and 128 goats and a cow were given to vulnerable people. The value of our activities amounts to about Frw 140m."
Youth Minister Jean Philbert Nsengimana lauded the youth for using their skills to contribute to the country's development. "You are able to use your knowledge in the society, those who did law at the university can legally advise residents on different issues, others who studied agronomy can advise people on modern farming techniques, etc.," he observed
Nsengimana also announced that in May a Youth Month will be organized, and urged young people to participate actively.
Education Minister Vincent Biruta for his part said that the 'Students on the Field' week will be an annual event, and suggested activities to be considered for future editions could include ICT training.
The week took place from March 9 to 16 under the theme "One goal, One passion, Build our Future."
