NFC Bankrolls Aspiring Moviemakers

Windhoek — It was lights, camera and action when 14 film students recently received their certificates in the fundamentals of film making from the Polytechnic of Namibia, through its Centre for Enterprise Development (CED).

The eight-week filming course was supported by the Namibia Film Commission (NFC) through funding to the tune of N$126 000, from which 10 out of the 14 students benefited.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony the NFC senior media officer, Andreas Andjene, said the NFC is proud to be associated with filmmakers in the country.

He stressed that Namibian filmmakers have done the country proud, adding that some are doing very well in the international film industry. "Some of our filmmakers have won awards and some are finding spots at international film festivals," said Andjene.

Andjene said the NFC has invested close to N$1 million in the development of the local film industry in the past few months. He emphasised that the NFC will continue to live up to its mandate of supporting, encouraging and promoting film production, the film industry and film marketing through the film and video development fund.

The NFC, he said, believes in the work produced by local filmmakers and the commission is always ready to assist the film industry to grow further. "This is why we entered into a partnership with the Centre for Enterprise Development in starting this eight-week filming course in the fundamentals of film making," he said.

He said the Namibian film industry is currently at a "promising ground level", and the quality films it produces put the country on the world map.

Andjene said the NFC has distinguished itself as the trendsetter with the funding initiative and hopes the results of its hard work will encourage upcoming filmmakers to enroll in its future courses. He encouraged all stakeholders to get involved in developing the Namibia film industry.

"Together we add building blocks to the development of our young industry, and we shall reap the fruit of its success in the near future," he said.

The event concluded with the screening of short films produced by the graduates.
