MIDDLE EAST, UAE, Gulf Medical University launches new courses for the UAE students

Ajman, UAE: The Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman is pioneering innovation in medical education by offering two new courses for the UAE students — Master of Science in Human Reproductive Biology and Master of Clinical Physical Therapy Programme.

Both the programmes are being offered for the first time in the UAE and accreditation procedures are being finalised with the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The Masters in Human Reproductive Biology has been developed as a two-year full-time credit-bearing programme designed to provide candidates with a good foundation of knowledge and skills in all aspects of Human Reproductive Biology.

The course will be geared towards preparing competent professionals and researchers who are capable and dedicated in contributing to the advancement of health care system in the UAE.

Programme Coordinator and Chief of Medical Staff at GMC Hospital and practicing Gynecologist, Dr Prashanth Hegde said the experiential component of the course includes posting in the molecular biology, biochemistry laboratory and in the department of radiology to learn laboratory techniques and skills of performing ultrasonography crucial for the diagnosis of infertility.

Students taking the course will be given opportunities to work in fertility clinics and state-of-art fertility laboratories to clerk and counsel infertility couples professionally and to gain exposure to various basic and advanced assisted reproductive techniques including in-vitro fertilisation and intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection.

The second offering, a Master of Clinical Physical Therapy (MPT), will also be a two year programme which will provide specialist training to practicing therapists. The course will be designed to provide hands-on training in state-of-art bio-mechanics and ergonomic laboratory and students will be engaged in evidence based practice.

Both the programmes will be open for admissions from September, subject to approvals from UAE Ministry of Higher Education.

Each year, the university receives more than 700 applications for 160 seats as admissions are based on aptitude and merit. Currently, the university has 636 students and the numbers are expected to rise with new programmes in the pipeline.

The university plans to increase the number of under-graduate programmes and new courses will be announced after completion of accreditation.
