The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) launched the “Green Universities” project in Jordan.
The project; funded by the United States Agency for International development USAID/the Public Action for Water, Energy & Environment Project; targets three Universities namely; Mutah University, Hashemite University and Princess Sumaya University for Technology.
The launching ceremony took the form of three workshops; one in each of the targeted universities. The objective of these launching workshops was to introduce the goals of the project as well as the expected outcomes.
The three launching workshops were held under the patronage of the Presidents of each of the three targeted universities.
Attendees to these workshops included the students & student groups, academic and administrative staff on campus, local NGOs in the surrounding communities and representatives from various relevant ministries.
The objectives of the project are to encourage and empower students and staff towards making changes in their universities that will lead to environmentally sustainable campuses.
Additionally, the project aims to institutionalize sustainable concepts within Jordanian universities structures and processes, to build the capacity of students in the fields of water, energy and domestic solid waste in order to assess the current status at the targeted universities in regard to relevant fields, to develop sustainable environmental charters for the three universities, and to implement sustainable environmental actions on the ground.
In addition, local communities surrounding each university will be targeted through their engagement in various environmental activities.
