The British Council says over 18,000 Nigerian students are schooling in the United Kingdom in both undergraduate and post graduate categories.
Addressing newsmen at the 2013 British Council Education Exhibition in Abuja, Brian Wilson, Programmes Director at the British Council stated this while underlying the fact that the Federal Government needed to do more on good governance and quality assurance.
While accepting that Nigerian students were coming tops amongst international students in the UK,
Wilson said the purpose of the annual exhibition was to give more students opportunity to study and live in the UK.
Wilson said though it was a bit expensive to study in the UK, it remained pertinent for students travelling abroad to be motivated to make the right choices so as to secure their future as well as maximize their opportunities and potentials.
The programmes director revealed that no fewer than seven countries would be participating in a study in Scotland to evaluate the standard and quality of education in Sub-Saharan Africa this week. The study is geared towards enhancing quality education in the region.
Project manager of the British Council, Toni Soyinka, said amongst other techniques, the Council was in partnership with some organisations and also linking up schools through workshops and seminars in building information exchange through dialogue to further boost education in Nigeria.
This year’s exhibition, the 10th in anniversary, started in Lagos, and is giving students broad based exposures to educational opportunities especially in the UK. Scores of schools and numerous persons participated at the event.
