AFRICA, Nigeria, University of Abuja Engineering Students to Be Transferred to Other Schools - Minister

The Federal Government has concluded plans to transfer some students of the University of Abuja to other institutions, the Daily Trust Newspaper is reporting.

The institution has remained closed since last November after it was shut down by the government following protests by students over the non-accreditation of some courses.

Students of the Medicine, Agriculture and
Engineering Faculties had been in the institution unsure of when their programmes will be accredited.

The Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Ahmed, announced on Tuesday during a meeting with a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) that the government has concluded plans to relocate Engineering students of the university to other universities, Daily Trust reports.

The minister said the students to be re-absorbed had already been identified. According to her, the transfer of the students will give the government some time to re-apply for fresh accreditation.

The NANS executives had gone to appeal to the minister to set up an emergency fund to acquire the equipment needed to secure accreditation for the affected courses.

Nothing was said about the fate of the other faculties affected by the accreditation problem.
