UAEU offers course in veterinary medicine

Al Ain, UAE: A new bachelors programme in veterinary medicine is being introduced at the College of Food and Agriculture of the UAE University (UAEU).

The programme, the first of its kind in the UAE, answers to the growing importance of veterinary medicine in various vital economic sectors, said a university spokesperson.

The programme was recently approved by the university council chaired by Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, who is also Chancellor of UAEU.

The five-year degree programme will include intensive practical and theoretical courses with successful students receiving qualifications similar to graduates from distinguished international veterinary programmes. Graduates from the programme will be able to deal with animal health issues related to the region in general and the UAE in particular, the spokesperson said.

Dr Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, Vice-Chancellor of UAEU, said the programme was also launched with an eye on the needs of the job market in the UAE. “The veterinary Bachelor programme is of particular importance because animal health is directly linked to food safety and the health of all human beings. Different agencies have been collaborating with UAEU for the programme that has also been enjoying the support of the Ministry of Presidential Affairs and Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority to provide vital training to candidates,” he said.

Professor Ghaleb Al Hadrami, dean of the College of Food and Agriculture at the UAEU, said the veterinary programme would contribute effectively in creating a qualified national workforce. “Even though there are more than 400 veterinarians in the country, very few of them are nationals,” he added.
