Dubai 25 February 2013: Journalism Students at the Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication (MBRSC) of the American University in Dubai ( AUD ) visited The National newspaper, the leading English-language voice in the Middle East. Both the English and Arabic Track students along with Ms. Rebecca Cathcart, Assistant Professor of Communication and Information Studies at AUD , and Ms. Layal El Alam, Media Coordinator at MBRSC, toured the newsroom of the newspaper’s office in Abu Dhabi.
“This is a labor of love” commented Hassan Fattah, the Editor-in-Chief of the National. He added: “You have to be passionate and love it to do it. You don’t do this for the money, but for the unique impact you can have on people’s lives and in trying to make the world just a bit better.”
During the tour, AUD students met with reporters and editors while learning how they manage their schedule and fill each section of the paper on a daily basis. They also got the chance to listen to the local journalism professionals’ advices.
Moreover, Fattah introduced the students to the newspaper’s sections’ editors, such as Sports, Lifestyle, Food, and Opinion, then each one of them explained how they assign and edit the respective stories for the print and online versions. Mr. Fattah focused on the importance of ‘Planning’ and being consistent in creating a strong newspaper.
“I am so glad we got to visit the newsroom,” said Duha Abbas, senior journalism student at AUD . “I was considering working at a TV station after I graduate, but the visit of The National inspired me to consider going into print.”
The trip gave the students a clear perspective on newsroom management and dynamic, as well as the ability to strive to become the journalists of the future for national and global audiences. As they returned back to campus, the students began polishing their resumes.
This visit came as part of a series of field trips organized by MBRSC every semester to leading media and governmental companies in UAE.
