The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has emerged as the best university of agriculture in Africa and second best university in Nigeria. The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Osun State emerged the best university in Nigeria.
The two emerged the first and the second best universities in the latest webometric ranking done for global universities by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de investigacoues, Spain. The report was released on February 6, this year.
However, FUNAAB, adjudged the second best in the country, is said to be the best university of agriculture in Africa.
Reacting to the ranking which placed OAU on the 14th position in African, the OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole, said, “This latest ranking reflects the success of the current university administration, which has put in place the policies, ideals and goals that made it possible for the university to attain the feat.”
Omole added that his administration would continue to reposition the university in a bid to surmount emerging challenges.
Also, in the latest ranking, FUNAAB beat other 121 universities in the country to clinch the second position in Nigeria and 29th in the league of 814 higher educational institutions in Africa.
The FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, said when compared with last year, when the institution was second best in Nigeria and 35th in Africa, it rose six points higher to clinch 29th in Africa.
This, Oyewole said, translates into an impressive performance improvement.

Other institutions which made the list of the first 10 in Nigeria include University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, University of Benin, Benin and Covenant University, Ota.
The Head of FUNAAB’s Webometric Centre, Dr. Olusegun Folorunso, attributed the feat to the ingenuity and commitment of the management, the dedication of the University Information and Communication Technology Resource Centre as well as the cooperation of the entire staff and students.
