Liberia: No Hike in State-Run University Fee

Administrators of the state-run University of Liberia have confirmed that there will be no increase in tuition as speculated by the students.
The administration of the University of Liberia has denied ever planning to increase tuition from LD$175.00 to USD$ 5.00 per credit hour as speculated by the students. University of Liberia President, Professor Dr. Emmet Dennis, termed the speculation regarding tuition increment as a "complete misinformation designed to create confusion" by some people.


A release from the University quotes the UL President as saying that the administration recently proposed to the Board of Trustees US$1.00 increment in tuition per credit hour for undergraduate studies in accordance with a proposal submitted and approved by the Board of Trustees nearly four years ago.

Dr. Dennis explained that it was regrettable that people who did not get the information correctly intended to create confusion by speculating the information that he (Dr. Dennis) had announced an increase in tuition from US$2.50 ($175.00 LD equivalent ) to US$ 5.00 (LD$350.00 equivalent per credit hour).

Dr. Dennis said it was prudent for those disseminating information to always ascertain the facts, including the mass media before airing or publishing their stories.

He however asserted that based upon the presentation of a program to improve the quality of education at the University of Liberia four years ago, by the current leadership, the Board of Trustees of the university approved a plan for gradual increase in tuition over a three-year period from the LD equivalent of UDD$1.40 per credit to the LD equivalent of US$5.00 per credit.

As a result, he added that tuition was increased from US$1.40 per credit to US$2.50, an equivalent of $175 per credit.

However, the UL President noted that it was the US$1.00 increment that people misinterpreted to the public.
